As a dance teacher, or student teacher, you are able to apply to become a member of the Society.

There are many categories of membership which offers many benefits including international recognition of your affiliation and teaching qualifications, the ability to enter candidates for examinations, discounted rates on courses to continue your professional development, a quarterly DANCE magazine and Dance Extra to keep you up to date and much more.

The broad range of membership categories has been designed to best suit members’ needs throughout the world. An overview of each category is detailed below;

Full Teaching

All members who hold Associate Status, CDE, Associate Diploma, Fellowship and Licentiate and who are actively teaching, pay the full teaching membership subscription and it must be fully paid up to date before he/she is allowed to enter candidates for examinations.

Non-Active

This is available to members who hold Associate Status, CDE, Associate Diploma, Fellowship and Licentiate and who are not actively teaching or entering candidates for examinations.

Pre-Registration

Pre-registration membership offers the same benefits as student membership but members are also able to enter candidates for examinations. UK members must be working towards their Foundation in Dance Instruction (FDI) and Certificate in Dance Education (CDE). UK members can enter candidates until December 2010. After this date, members must hold a CDE in their chosen genre to enter candidates for examinations. For International members, these members should be working towards gaining their Associate whilst under pre-registered membership.

Student

For non-teaching members who hold Intermediate, Advanced or the Foundation in Dance Education qualifications with a Theatre Faculty.

Joint

This is suitable for two members residing at the same address. This is one and a half times the full teaching subscription, but only one issue of DANCE magazine is sent to the address.

Affiliated

No longer available to new members. Affiliated Membership was granted to some teachers who were allowed to continue entering candidates for examinations when registration was introduced in 1986.

Life Membership

Members who have held a Licentiate or Fellowship qualification in any ISTD Faculty for at least 35 years, and have continuously paid the annual subscription, may apply in writing to the Finance, General Administration & Membership Services Department for Life Membership.
